NASA understood the reasons for the problems with the SLS engine during the last fire test and said that the rocket was not damaged
twenty.01.2021 [12:48],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

NASA officials said the main stage of the giant Space Launch System (SLS) rocket for lunar flights is in good condition, despite its early shutdown during a crucial firing test over the weekend.

NASA / Robert Markowitz

The four-engine SLS key first stage came to life on Saturday (January 16) during a firing test at NASA’s John Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. The engines were supposed to run for 485 seconds — that is how much it takes to launch a mission to the moon — but they shut down after just 67 seconds.

After analyzing the test data, NASA determined that the problem is not with the engines or other equipment, which are «in perfect condition.». The shutdown was caused by the test parameters, which were deliberately limited to ensure the safety of the stage during the test.

These limited options were related to hydraulics — in particular, a system designed to stabilize and rotate each engine during flight. The preset parameters for the Engine 2 system were exceeded during the test and the stage automation completed the test. They added: if such parameters arise during a real flight, the SLS on-board computers would not consider them a problem.

Stage also reported MCF (Main Component Failure) error during testing. According to representatives of the agency, this happened about 1.5 seconds after starting the engines, did not affect the stop and may relate to problems with the devices of engine No. 4. SLS team continues to study MCF readings. Team members will also delve deeper into reports of a bright flash observed near the engines during test shutdown, although sensor data and visual inspection of the system revealed nothing anomalous.

SLS is vital to the Artemis program, which aims to land two astronauts near the moon’s south pole in 2024 and ensure a continued human presence on and around Earth’s natural satellite by the end of this decade. The first stage, which was recently tested, will launch the Artemis-1 mission — a test unmanned flight of the Orion capsule around the Moon.

Currently, Artemis-1 is due to launch in late 2021 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It is not yet clear how the passed tests will affect the agency’s plans. Currently, the SLS team does not exclude that it will be necessary to conduct repeated fire tests at the Stennis Space Center.
