Apple has strengthened the verification of applications with irrationally high prices in the App Store
Not so long ago, several expensive fraudulent applications were discovered in the Apple App Store, bringing their developers millions of dollars a year. Most of these apps have deliberately inflated ratings and fake reviews in order to appear more often in search results and not arouse suspicion. Thus, the developers of such applications manage to trick users into making irrational expensive purchases.
Apparently, Apple has now begun to fight similar fraudulent attempts by rejecting publications in the app store that look unreasonably expensive. Internet resource 9to5Mac received a copy of Apple’s response to the developer refusing to publish a certain software product. It states that the developer’s set subscription price «does not reflect the value of the features and content offered to the user.». In addition, the letter explicitly states that setting too high prices in applications is nothing more than deceiving users. The full text of the letter looks like this:
Customers expect the App Store to be a safe and secure marketplace for buying digital goods. Apps published on the store must not undermine this trust by attempting to trick or rip off users in any way.
Unfortunately, the prices you choose for your app or the products available for purchase from it do not reflect the value of the features and content offered to the user. Setting unreasonably high prices for content or services is deceiving customers and is unacceptable for the App Store.
In particular, prices for the following items are irrationally high:
- — [deleted].
To fix the problem, we recommend that you take the following steps:
- — Modify your app or in-app purchase products to provide more value to the user at the time of purchase;
- — Choose a price for your app or in-app purchase products that correctly reflects the value you are delivering to the user;
- — Once you’ve made the appropriate changes, resubmit your app for review.
This app may take longer to be published next time and will not be eligible for expedited review until the described issue is resolved.
It is worth noting that Apple is ready to contact the developers of rejected applications and publish them in the AppStore if it is proved that they are not being used for fraudulent purposes. For example, an app from a developer who forwarded a letter from Apple to 9to5Mac was later approved because he was able to prove that the high subscription price was due to the use of paid APIs to perform certain tasks.
Note that Apple’s policy of refusing to publish overpriced apps has been in effect for a long time, so it’s unclear when the company began to apply it more strictly. This may have happened after the recent discovery in the App Store of a number of fraudulent applications. Apple itself says it is following its commitment to making the App Store a safe place where users can find and download the apps they need without worrying about their security.
