Lunar mission «Artemis 1» in 2021 under threat: test of the super-heavy NASA SLS engine was interrupted

NASA conducts critical test of the main stage engines of its Space Launch System (SLS) super-heavy rocket. However, something went wrong: the accelerator engines shut down earlier than planned.

SLS tests lasted just over a minute (NASA / Robert Markowitz)

On January 17 at 01:27 am Moscow time, smoke and flames erupted from four RS-25 engines, which power the main accelerator of the giant NASA SLS rocket, which is the centerpiece of the American lunar program Artemis, at the test bench of the John Stennis Space Center.

2.65 million liters of low temperature fuel was burned, but it flowed through the engines for just over one minute. This is much less than the planned 485 seconds (over 8 minutes) during which the engines will run during flight. “Today, not everything went according to the script, — said the head of NASA Jim Bridenstine (Jim Bridenstine) after testing. «But we got a lot of excellent data, a lot of excellent information for further analysis.».

It is too early to say exactly what caused the premature stop of engine tests. Dispatchers during the test reference the MCF (Main Component Failure) associated with engine # 4 on the SLS accelerator. SLS Program Manager John Honeycutt added that after about 60 seconds, cameras detected a flash in the engine thermal protector, although its cause and significance remains to be seen.

It is still difficult to say whether a second fire test will be required at the Stennis Space Center or whether the next tests will take place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, from where SLS is to send the unmanned mission «Artemis 1» with a flyby around the Moon by the end of this year. Likewise, it is still too early to say if Artemis 1 can take place this year. “I think it’s too early to say,” said Mr Bridenstein about the possibility of launching a mission in 2021. “When we figure out what went wrong, we’ll know what the future holds.”.

During a January 12 press conference, Boeing Vice President and Program Manager for SLS John Shannon noted that the engines must run for a certain amount of time to get all the necessary data. “If, for any reason, we have a premature stop, we will have all the engineering data necessary to provide high confidence in the machine in about 250 seconds,” he said at the time. With the engines running for just over 60 seconds, it’s hard to tell how much data was received and how confident the teams were in the rocket.

The test was originally planned to be carried out an hour earlier, but during the countdown, engineers paused the process to re-check the operation of the drainage system and conduct other checks on the engine on the test bench. The teams were able to quickly go through all possible problems and launch a fire test. It is designed to test the operation of the four RS-25 main engines, fuel tanks, computing systems, avionics and other SLS components. The test simulated a launch, rigidly holding the car on the stand (by the way, it was on this site that the engines of the Saturn-5 rocket and Space Shuttle spacecraft were tested).

SLS is considered the most powerful missile ever created in the history of mankind. Mr. Bridenstein stressed that despite the premature shutdown of the engines, the SLS that passed the fire tests should not be considered a failure — lessons will be learned from the test. “I’m pretty sure the team can figure out what the anomaly is and figure out how to fix it, and then get down to business. Because we don’t fail. We can retreat, but then we will come back and do it again, «he said.
