It is too early to say exactly what caused the premature stop of engine tests. Dispatchers during the test reference the MCF (Main Component Failure) associated with engine # 4 on the SLS accelerator. During a January 12 press conference, Boeing Vice President and Program Manager for SLS John Shannon noted that the engines must run for a certain amount of time to get all the necessary data. “If, for any reason, we have a premature stop, we will have all the engineering data necessary to provide high confidence in the machine in about 250 seconds,” he said at the time. With the engines running for just over 60 seconds, it’s hard to tell how much data was received and how confident the teams were in the rocket.
The test was originally planned to be carried out an hour earlier, but during the countdown, engineers paused the process to re-check the operation of the drainage system and conduct other checks on the engine on the test bench.
