Judging by the patent, AMD is going to use chiplets in video cards, despite the difficulties
New application filed with the US Patent Office on the last day of the past year outlines AMD’s approach to a potential chiplet-based graphics accelerator design. The manufacturer pointed out the problems in this design and explained how they could be avoided in the future.
According to AMD, GPUs are still monolithic chips for a reason: there are a lot of problems with the interaction of several chips. The current graphics pipeline is not particularly efficient for multiple GPUs (the same goes for configurations like Crossfire or SLI) as it is sometimes difficult to distribute tasks across multiple active chips in a system. AMD also describes the complex and design-intensive synchronization of memory contents between multiple GPU chips.
AMD believes these problems could be avoided by implementing «high bandwidth passive crosslinks». According to AMD, the first GPU chipset must be directly coupled to the CPU, while each of the graphics chiplets in the array must be coupled to the first GPU via passive cross-linking. Such links should be placed in a silicon interposer, which is an intermediate plate with conductors in one or more layers. A group of chiplets connected in this way will work, in fact, like a system on a chip.
Conventional GPUs have a shared last-level cache (LLC), but to avoid timing issues, AMD believes that each of the chiplets should get their own LLC, and they should all be uniform and consistent across all chiplets.
AMD has not publicly confirmed that it is working on a design of a graphics accelerator based on chiplets. However, there were rumors that the RDNA 3+ design could be based on chiplets. AMD has a lot of experience with multi-chip designs, especially in their Ryzen processors and various APUs including gaming consoles.
It is expected that both competitors, NVIDIA and Intel, can also go down this path, which will allow them to release accelerators with higher performance. Intel has already confirmed that it is working on Xe-HP graphics cards with a multi-chip design — their debut is expected this year. According to rumors, NVIDIA will present its first such accelerator along with the Hopper architecture. Back in 2021, NVIDIA’s chief scientific advisor Bill Dally said that the company had developed a technology for creating a graphics accelerator with a multichip layout.
