Shutdown of Samsung’s Texas plant will cause a shortage of Qualcomm chips — shipments of 5G smartphones will decline
Samsung S2 semiconductor plant in Austin was forced to suspend operations in mid-February due to power supply problems throughout the state of Texas. Latest TrendForce research shows that plant-wide capacity utilization is not expected to rise above 90% until the end of March, with some component shortages expected to worsen as a result.
Samsung has several products that are critical to smartphone manufacturing, including Qualcomm 5G RFICs (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits) and OLED Display Drivers (OLED DDIC) and Camera Sensor Logic (CIS Logic IC). The release of the first two products was particularly affected, as a result of which, according to analysts, global smartphone production in the second quarter of 2021 will fall by about 5%.
According to TrendForce research, Samsung was able to prepare for a power outage ahead of time as the company was alerted by the local utility. Therefore, the loss of WIPs caused by the incident was minimal, and more importantly, the equipment was not damaged. However, the delay in resuming full operation of the plant is expected to last more than two weeks. This incident as a whole will have some impact on the global semiconductor industry, which is already experiencing a serious production crisis. In terms of capacity utilization at S2 plant, Qualcomm 5G RFIC chips, Samsung LSI OLED DDIC and Samsung LSI CIS Logic IC account for 30%, 20% and 15%, respectively.
Of the three aforementioned products, Qualcomm RFICs are critically important in the production of 5G smartphones. This product is shipped to customers as part of 5G SoCs or modems. The strongest impact of winter blackouts on Qualcomm RFIC shipments is expected to occur in the second quarter of 2021, which could cause total 5G smartphone production to drop 30% in the quarter. However, TrendForce estimates overall smartphone production will decline by only 5% this quarter, given existing 5G chip stocks. Also, in order to compensate for the lack of 5G components, manufacturers will increase the production of 4G devices. In addition, Samsung will focus on radio frequency solutions in the S2 recovery process.
At the same time, TrendForce did not reduce the forecast for the volume of smartphone production for the entire 2021. According to analysts, 1.36 billion devices will be produced in all four quarters. However, due to winter storms in Texas, the share of 5G phones in this volume may decrease from 38% (as predicted earlier) to 36.5%.
