SpaceX reveals key highlights of Starship SN8’s recent test flight
24.12.2021 [10:58],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

SpaceX has made notable progress this year on the promising Starship super-heavy rocket, thanks in part to a successful test flight. SN8 prototype was launched to an altitude of 12 km. Unfortunately, it all ended in contact with the ground at high speed and an explosion, but the head of the company Elon Musk considers the tests successful and is very pleased with the data obtained. Now the company has released an additional video about this flight.

In 2 minutes, we are shown the takeoff process from different perspectives (including the launch vehicle itself with its engines), and the gradual shutdown of the first and second engines, and the release of liquid oxygen with the shutdown of the third engine, and the horizontal reorientation of a huge ship using the flaps, followed by free fall, and, finally, a maneuver with a turn and an attempt with the help of two engines to land the rocket vertically.

Just before touching the ground, you can see how the flame intensifies, and then an explosion occurs — obviously, the automation was not able to compensate for the speed gained due to gravity with the help of jet thrust. At the end of the video, SpaceX proudly reports that the SN8 prototype demonstrated the first of its kind controlled aerodynamic descent and pre-landing turn maneuver:

Given the size of the Starship (50 meters high by 9 meters in diameter), the spectacle of flight and similar maneuvers of such a machine is truly mesmerizing. SpaceX has already rolled out its next prototype from the hangar, so we may not have to wait too long for a sequel, but it will be next year.
