Photorealistic digital avatars to be part of future Facebook VR headsets
08.03.2021 [23:52],
Nikolay Khizhnyak

Future VR headsets from Facebook will be able to create more realistic digital avatars that can better and more naturally convey emotions and facial expressions of users. This was stated in an interview with The Information by the head of the social network Mark Zuckerberg. He shared his thoughts on how he sees the future of the virtual and augmented reality market in the next ten years.

“I really look forward to the built-in face and eye tracking technology from new versions of VR headsets. When in a virtual environment, you want to more convincingly demonstrate your presence. Therefore, it would be nice if the headsets are equipped with all the necessary sensors to generate realistic user avatars, «Zuckerberg said. He also added that this idea will not work without new hardware technologies.

“As for VR, one of the most important tasks for us now is solving the question of how to fit more sensors into a compact headset, which will provide a significantly advanced social experience of communication in a virtual space,” commented the head of the world’s largest social network.

While current virtual reality technologies can already bring amazing social and gaming experiences, he said, in the future, VR headsets will be able to create lifelike digital avatars of people, allowing for real eye contact and believable emotions. He compared the desired quality of future digital avatars with Epic’s MetaHuman technology, which creates highly realistic virtual faces.

Facebook has released several versions of digital avatars for the virtual environment so far. The company will introduce a new generation of more realistic avatars this year, according to Zuckerberg. The Information also managed to find out that Facebook-owned Oculus is already considering what the Quest 3 and Quest 4 headsets will be — future versions of the device will remain autonomous.

The company has also recently shown its interest in augmented reality (AR). Facebook is going to release smart glasses this year, but Zuckerberg noted that standard AR elements will not be implemented in the device.

The head of the social network also raised the issue of buying CTRL-Labs, which develops special high-tech bracelets that can read neural activity from physical gestures and translate these signals into computer commands. These devices represent a kind of non-invasive alternative to the brain-computer interface, which is being developed by Neuralink Elon Musk.

“We don’t think people will want to have their skull drilled just to use virtual or augmented reality,” Zuckerberg said. He also added that Neuralink really has great potential in practical problems, especially in medicine and the development of technologies for the management of artificial prostheses. “But ultimately I don’t think this device will become part of the consumer market anytime soon,” Zuckerberg concluded.
