Long Start: Toshiba to Launch World’s First MAMR Hard Drives Next Year
About two years ago, it became known that Toshiba is preparing to release 18-TB HDD on microwave recording (MAMR) platters. This was announced by the Japanese magnetic plate manufacturer Showa Denko. However, neither in 2021 nor in 2021 Toshiba presented new products. According to the new plans of the company, deliveries of MAMR HDD will begin at the end of March 2021. Although this will come with a delay, Toshiba will remain the first to launch MAMR drives.

Western Digital promised to master MAMR technology first. But she didn’t succeed. Probably, in the process of preparing for the commercial implementation of hard drives based on the new technology, tangible barriers arose. Western Digital retreated and, as an intermediate stage, began to promote HDDs with EAMR technology (with «energy» recording support), which is not much different from the classic perpendicular magnetic recording. Both companies recently released 20TB each (Seagate began commercial shipping of 20TB HAMR HDD today). Seagate, we will clarify, went along the path of mastering heated magnetic recording technology (HAMR). This required new magnetic heads with a built-in laser and new magnetic plates (transition to glass and a new magnetic coating). Mastering Toshiba’s MAMR technology also required everything new — magnetic heads with a microwave emitter and new magnetic plates. Hopefully, another quarter will pass and Toshiba can be congratulated on the commercial development of the technology to which the hard disk industry has been going for about two decades.
