In the middle of this year, under the wing of the European Union, a project to create a digital twin of the Earth starts. The project is designed for up to ten years, during which a tremendous amount of work will have to be done in a host of related areas. But on the other hand, the output promises to appear a tool for high-precision forecasting of a wide list of phenomena on our planet, from natural to man-made.

«Turning rivers back» the USSR and other countries in the last century greatly changed the behavior of global ecosystems and not always for the better. The consequences of such interventions can be more costly than the economic benefits. Potentially, the project «Destination Earth» of the European Union to create a digital twin of the Earth promises to help politicians and specialists not only judge global changes on the planet, but even assess the degree of influence of this or that infrastructure facility on the climate, ecology and even the yield of a particular agricultural product in a given region.

Experts are aware that creating a digital twin of the Earth with a given resolution of one kilometer will be a very, very difficult task. It may help that weather forecasting with supercomputers has become commonplace, although algorithms in this area stopped developing about a decade ago. This will need to be overcome and new prediction and analysis models will need to be developed.

The European Space Agency and operators of meteorological satellites promise to provide significant assistance in the creation of a digital twin of the Earth. In the final version, it is envisaged that the digital model of the Earth will continuously receive weather data not only from satellites and from earth weather stations, but even from smartphones of ordinary citizens, which will significantly increase the accuracy of modeling. And in this case, there is no way to do without AI, which will help to perceive and interpret an endless stream of data.

The researchers also note that today there are no supercomputers that could become the basis of a digital model of the Earth, but it is assumed that an array of graphics accelerators from 20 thousand. pieces and more with consumption from 20 MW. By the way, such requirements also mean that the supercomputer for the Earth’s digital twin will need to be placed where there is enough energy from renewable sources, otherwise the twin will start to steadily pollute its own original.
