Russian analogue of Microsoft Office 365 conquers Africa
The platform «MyOffice», the Russian analogue of Microsoft Office 365, conquers Africa, writes Bloomberg. A Russian software developer has signed deals for the licensing of the MyOffice suite with the governments of Cameroon, Burundi and Congo. In the future, the Russian company plans to enter the markets of 23 more African countries.

It is indicated that one of the main advantages of the MyOffice platform over a more eminent competitor is its price. The Russian version of the office suite is much cheaper than the offer of the American tech giant. But most importantly, the Russian developer successfully plays on the fears of officials to store data on servers located outside their own borders, the newspaper notes.
Cameroon is piloting 500 free MyOffice licenses for schoolchildren and is considering installing the software in other government agencies, Bloomberg points out. According to the country’s education minister Laurent Etoundi, the government chose the Russian MyOffice because it does not require sending data to corporate servers abroad.
“Thus, we can be sure that state secrets will be protected from hackers or any third parties,” the official explained.
According to Bloomberg, millions of Africans are only now connecting to the Internet for the first time, and many are using their smartphones. And if the large economies of the region (South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt) are already in the field of vision of large US technology companies, then in the small African countries there are still opportunities for alternative suppliers. Entering the African market can be crucial for software developers given its skyrocketing growth prospects. According to trade organization GSMA, by the end of 2025, the number of Internet connections via smartphones in sub-Saharan Africa will almost double to 678 million. According to forecasts of Dmitry Komissarov, CEO of MyOffice, sales of their platform in Africa could amount to 15% of the company’s total revenue.
One of the factors playing into the hands of the expansion of Russian software in Africa is the sluggishness of the major Western players in this area. For example, Google in Africa still does not have a single data center. For Microsoft Azure, in turn, only recently was one of the first centers built in South Africa, Bloomberg notes.
