Skoltech researchers and their colleagues at the University of Cambridge have found out that quasiparticles of polaritons can be represented as complex structures resembling molecules. Such artificially generated «molecules» have the potential to become the basis of the quantum supercomputer of the future, the computation speed and energy efficiency of which will exponentially exceed the capabilities of modern devices.

Polaritons are non-existent particles (quasiparticles) that arise in the process of interaction of photons with elementary excitation of the medium, in this case — with electronic excitation in semiconductors, dielectrics or metals. Such excitation is also represented by a quasiparticle or exciton. Thus, the researchers talk about «molecules» of exciton polaritons (light excitons).

During the study, it turned out that exciton polariton condensates — relatively stable quasi-formations in semiconductors — are able to combine into clusters with the most bizarre, but stable forms. In their behavior, such formations behave like molecules, although the latter consist of atoms, and the former — of interactions of quasiparticles. Such a difference did not become an obstacle to presenting quasiparticles in the form of «molecules» with all the ensuing features. For example, «molecules» from quasiparticles can be synthesized with a high predictability of the result up to obtaining the desired structures. Such structures can be elements for switching and transferring data, and the participation of photons in all this promises low energy dissipation and higher data transfer rates.

“In the course of further research, we found that such states [combinations of polariton condensates] can take on a variety of forms that can be controlled by adjusting the individual physical parameters of the system. Based on these observations, we made an assumption about the existence of «artificial polariton molecules» and proposed to investigate the possibilities of their use in quantum information systems, «said one of the authors of the study, Alexander Johnston.
