Intel hopes Thunderbolt popularity will finally skyrocket by next year

Intel’s ultra-fast Thunderbolt technology is still not widely used. However, this may change as early as next year, as computer manufacturers increasingly equip their products with this interface.

Intel hoped Thunderbolt, which debuted in the MacBook Pro in 2021, would quickly catch on and become commonplace on most computers. A year after its release, the company speculated that Thunderbolt would gain popularity by 2021-20021. However, this interface is still the domain of premium devices.

In order to increase the popularity of Thunderbolt, Intel has integrated the corresponding controller into its latest Tiger Lake processors. This means new laptops based on these chips get Thunderbolt without the need for a separate chip. With Intel’s Tiger Lake processors being ubiquitous, the company is confident that Thunderbolt will finally have widespread adoption. Intel expects this interface will be used in more than 50 percent of PCs sold by 2022. In terms of devices that will be released next year, most of them will boast Thunderbolt support. In addition, desktop PCs with Intel Alder Lake chips will see the light next year, which, like Tiger Lake for laptops, will offer an integrated Thunderbolt controller.

Thunderbolt ports provide much faster speed and versatility than conventional USB. They can replace HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, power connectors and many others, as they allow you to connect drives, network adapters, monitors and other peripherals. It is also worth noting that the new Thunderbolt 4 allows multiport docking stations and hubs to offer users the simultaneous use of three connectors instead of one, further expanding the functionality of the interface.

However, most users remain committed to USB as accessories for this interface are much cheaper. However, a major advantage of Thunderbolt is that this interface offers three times faster data transfer rates, which is especially important when working with large amounts of data.
