The first tests of discrete graphics Intel Iris Xe MAX appeared: the miracle did not happen
Intel Iris Xe MAX is a new discrete notebook GPU with 96 Execution Units (EU). Some 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors have the same number of GPU cores. Accelerator based on Xe-LP architecture and printed using Intel’s 10nm SuperFin process.
The 96 EU has 768 shader processors — not enough for competitive gaming, but the Iris Xe MAX is designed for ultra-compact laptops that are already equipped with Tiger Lake processors. Taken together, we have Intel’s first fully-fledged discrete GPU ecosystem in years.
Intel does not offer any technology that allows external and integrated graphics to be combined into a single unit for graphics rendering, like NVIDIA SLI or AMD CrossFire. This is quite unfortunate, given that both GPU options are essentially the same crystal, so the bundle would be interesting. Instead, Intel opted for the traditional configuration, where discrete graphics appear in the system as another GPU and only works in games.
Intel Promotes Xe MAX As GPU For Notebook Content Creators Where Video Coding Is Important Over Gaming Performance. Therefore, MAX is more of an auxiliary graphics rather than a specialized solution for rendering complex raster scenes. First Iris Xe MAX laptops already tested. One of the first results was published by OvO, which evaluated the performance of the Acer Swift S3x:
GPU-Z does not fully recognize Xe MAX discrete graphics yet. Obviously, the frequency and memory bandwidth are indicated incorrectly, but data on the kernel architecture is available:
OvO Tests Intel Discrete GPU in 3DMark. Iris Xe MAX scored 1826 points in 3DMark Time Spy and 6611 points in 3DMark Fire Strike. These are most likely general estimates for graphics and processor and, in addition, as the reviewer explained, they do not reflect the final performance as the drivers are raw and often crash.
But in general, the performance of Intel Iris Xe MAX dGPU is somewhere in the region of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile, GTX 970M and MX450 — the performance of the latter is closest to Intel’s solution. This is shown by the data of the Notebookcheck resource:
Finally, the tests were carried out by the PurePC resource on ASUS ZenBook 14 UX425E and Acer Swift S3x laptops — they showed the superiority of Iris Xe MAX graphics over the integrated Radeon Graphics 8 accelerator in Ryzen 7 4800U, as well as a slight lag behind the old GeForce MX350 accelerator in games (in 3DMark on the contrary, the MX350 lags far behind):
