Intel to release Xe-family graphics card for desktop PCs in the first half of 2021
Intel today unveils its first discrete graphics accelerator built on the Xe architecture, the Iris Xe Max mobile graphics card. At the same time, the company officially confirmed that this is only the first product in a wide range of Intel video cards, and next year a whole set of solutions will be released, designed for both desktops and the server market.
From the outset, Intel kept repeating that Xe is a scalable graphics architecture that can be used in solutions of fundamentally different levels. The company’s plans imply the creation on its basis of not only integrated graphics subsystems and discrete entry-level video cards, but also high-performance gaming graphics, and even computing accelerators for AI and data centers. Intel today confirmed that Intel Xe graphics will soon go beyond the mobile segment.
In the first half of 2021, the company is going to introduce discrete graphics cards of the Xe-LP family aimed at desktop PCs. In other words, the long-awaited Intel graphics cards that can be used in desktops will hit the market within the next eight months. However, the first such cards will not claim the crown of gaming performance and will rather be focused on entry-level systems.
The name of the Xe-LP architecture stands for Low-performance, that is, «low performance». Therefore, video cards based on this architecture will most likely become something like desktop counterparts of the Iris Xe Max and, at best, will be able to compete with solutions of the GeForce GT 1050 class. In addition, based on the information available, Xe-LP architecture graphics cards for desktop computers will be mainly supplied to OEMs and not intended for general retail sale.
Fortunately, in the desktop segment, Intel is not going to be limited to only budget graphics cards for the OEM segment, and in parallel is preparing a high-performance graphics accelerator for gamers — Xe-HPG. Such a video card, especially anticipated by enthusiasts, should be released in the second half of next year.
At the same time, Intel promises to develop Xe-based computing accelerators and solutions for the server market. Already this year, the Intel Xe-LP family server processor will go on sale — it will be focused primarily on transcoding of streaming video data. And next year, the Xe-HP architecture will come into use, capable of becoming the basis of full-fledged computational accelerators with a multichip layout and overall performance up to petaflops.
