Apple starts to list the repairability rating of iPhones and MacBooks to sell them in France
Apple has added repairability metrics for iPhones and MacBooks to its online store in France to comply with a new French law that went into effect this year. MacGeneration reports that the rating takes into account features such as ease of disassembly, availability of a repair manual, and availability of spare parts.

Links to the final repairability ratings of each product, with details of how they were posted, are available on the dedicated Apple Support page. The repairability level of Apple products varies slightly by device and generation. For example, the iPhone 12 family received 6 points out of 10, while last year’s iPhone 11 has a significantly lower rating — 4.5-4.6 points. The improvement, according to a detailed breakdown by points, is due to the fact that new iPhones are easier to disassemble than previous models, and parts are cheaper than the total cost of the phone. The scores range from 5.6 to 7 between different MacBook models.
Repairability figures must be quoted under the new French law, which came into force on January 1, along with new waste legislation. The website, which presents estimates from various manufacturers, notes that only 40% of French electrical devices were repaired last year after being out of order. The government intends to increase this figure to 60% within five years, informing consumers through this scoring system and putting pressure on manufacturers to improve performance.
The system is imperfect. Radio France Internationale notes, for example, that manufacturers can easily increase scores with simple measures such as providing additional information about software updates. At least one of the companies has already made changes in response to the law. Le Monde’s report notes that Samsung has offered an online repair guide for its Galaxy S21 Plus, clearly in an attempt to improve its repairability rating over the previous year’s model. The EU has used a similar initiative in the past to promote energy efficiency — where labels offered simple information about the energy consumption of household products.
The new French law is still in the early stages of adaptation, and only in 2022 will companies begin to be punished with fines for non-compliance. But there is already hope that the initiative, which currently extends to smartphones, laptops, TVs, washing machines and lawn mowers, could be expanded to include more product categories in the future. And given that last year the European Parliament voted in favor of a law on the right to renovate, it is hoped that similar initiatives will be extended to other countries.
