Russian quadcopter can be powered by a laser beam from space
Rocket and Space Corporation (RSC) Energia named after. FROM.P. Koroleva proposed a project for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capable of receiving power from a laser beam. «Electromagnetic radiation from a laser radiation generation system located on a ground, air or space control station, the formation and guidance system is formed into a laser beam with specified parameters and, using the search, tracking and guidance system, is directed to the quadcopter body», — noted in the patent documentation.
It is assumed that the laser beam will hit the photovoltaic cells, which will generate the electrical current required to power the aircraft.
The proposed system can be used in operating scenarios that do not require high flight speeds, but require a long hovering time. This can be, say, video surveillance of certain territories or obtaining scientific information about any objects.
