Mark Zuckerberg Allegedly Challenged Facebook to «Hurt» Apple Over New Privacy Rules
Apple and Facebook have public feuds in the past few months as the Cupertino giant enacts new privacy rules. There has been a long history of controversy between the two companies, but recently Facebook has been vigorously criticizing an upcoming iOS and iPadOS feature that will require software and companies like Facebook to request permission from users to track them on other sites.
While much of the war of words between tech titans remained in the professional realm, Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook have exchanged barbs in the past. During an interview in 20221 at the height of the infamous Cambridge Analytica scandal, Cook was asked how Apple would react if faced with a similar crisis. The executive ruled out even a hypothetical situation, saying that Apple would not be in the position of Facebook due to different approaches to privacy and user data. Zuckerberg then retorted, calling Cook’s comments «extremely frivolous» and «not at all true.».
Now, according to anonymous whistleblowers in The Wall Street Journal, Zuckerberg, outraged by Tim Cook’s new comments and Facebook’s deteriorating reputation, reportedly told his aides and team members that Facebook should «hurt» Apple. Last month, during a company report, Zuckerberg called Apple an increasingly serious threat to Facebook and accused the Cupertino giant of using its platforms to interfere with Facebook apps.
The day after public comments, Tim Cook gave an indirect answer, speaking at the conference «Computers, privacy and data protection», where he denounced Facebook and hinted that the business model of the largest social network, based on maximum user engagement, leads to increased fragmentation and violence. During the same speech, Cook denounced Facebook’s role in the January 6 Capitol protests, accusing social media algorithms of spreading conspiracy theories.
In December, Facebook launched full-page ads in popular American magazines, criticizing Apple’s new ATT (App Tracking Transparency) requirement, which aims to force apps in the App Store to ask users for permission to track their activity on third-party apps and sites. Facebook says Apple will harm small businesses that rely on targeted ads resulting from effective tracking of people (though, reportedly, even Facebook employees do not believe in the social network’s touching concern for small businesses). Cook responded bluntly on Twitter, stating that Apple just wants to give users the choice of whether they want to be tracked or not.
Despite this, in a statement to The Wall Street Journal, Facebook spokeswoman Dani Lever denied the existence of personal animosities between executives: she said the tension was driven by concerns about the future of free internet. Facebook said the choice between tracking users for targeted ads and protecting their privacy is a «false trade-off» because both can be achieved. A spokeswoman reiterated previous Facebook statements that Apple’s ATT requirement is not intended to preserve user privacy, but is aimed at increasing profits and is anti-competitive behavior.
Apple pledges to launch ATT on iOS and iPadOS 14.5 «early spring» and Facebook seems to have admitted defeat in its failed attempt to thwart the implementation of the new rules. Apps can freely inform users that they are going to track them in other apps and sites.
