Many pirated games have been distributed through the Edge extension store, but Microsoft has already responded
13.02.2021 [14:21],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

The Microsoft Edge Extension Store offered illegal copies of a number of iconic games, including Mario Kart 64, Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Pac-Man, Tetris, Cut The Rope and even Microsoft’s own hit Minecraft. The developers of these projects (GamePro, Gamelands, StayReal, Kday, etc.) mentioned in the descriptions are not related to well-known companies.

The verge

This story made a lot of noise thanks to the publication of the resource The Verge, but after a few hours all the originally mentioned projects were deleted, although others related to Sonic, Mario and Pac-Man remained, along with many copies of 2048, Flappy Bird, Fruit Ninja and Temple Run. Here are screenshots of just some of the games found by journalists:

Ironically, Microsoft itself seems to have promoted these browser extensions in a tweet to @MSEdgeDev, which was then deleted. After seeing such an ad, one Jordan Chase installed the Mario Kart 64 extension and said that this extension uses an emulator and ROM.

KoolAid / ResetEra

While emulators are generally legal and some sites (like the Internet Archive) host games that can be played in a browser, it is highly unlikely that Nintendo, which is well known for its fight against ROM publishing and pirates, will allow people to download copies of their popular games through free browser extensions.

Some of the discovered pirated games had reviews dating back to October. It’s unclear why they’ve been available in the Microsoft catalog for so long. In the description of many extensions it was mentioned that we are not talking about official games. For example, the Mario Kart 64 page reported: “IMPORTANT! This emulator is not official or endorsed by Nintendo. All graphics, games and other multimedia materials are the property of their respective owners and authors. This game is for all Mario fans!»

Microsoft and Nintendo Tell The Verge They Are Studying The Situation. Obviously, remote games are just the beginning, and in the near future the catalog will be seriously cleaned up.
