Flagship Ryzen 9 5950X sets two performance records at once in PassMark
AMD’s new six-core Ryzen 5 5600X chip briefly held the title of highest performing consumer processor in single-threaded tasks according to PassMark. The crown of primacy, but so far unofficially, was intercepted by the flagship of the Zen 3 series — the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X. Not only did it set a single-threaded record, it was also the fastest in the multi-threaded performance rankings.

The results are no longer available in the PassMark database, but the German resource ComputerBase managed to take screenshots before they were removed. Given the circumstances, it is still difficult to say under what conditions the test was carried out: whether the Ryzen 9 5950X was overclocked and RAM with a frequency higher than the DDR4-3200 standard recommended by AMD itself. While these questions remain unclear. Therefore, the final conclusions can be made after the official tests of the new chip appear.
According to current data, the Ryzen 9 5950X is up to 34.4% and 16% faster, respectively, in single-threaded and multi-threaded tasks than the Ryzen 9 3950X. Considering that the new flagship of the Zen 3 series operates in the frequency range from 3.4 to 4.9 GHz, and the older chip on Zen 2 operates at frequencies from 3.5 to 4.7 GHz, then such a high superiority of the new processor indicates significant improvements in terms of IPC, because it would hardly have been possible to achieve such an increase by the frequencies alone.

If we talk about the comparison with the competitor, then according to the results of PassMark, the Ryzen 9 5950X is up to 16.3% faster in single-thread than the ten-core Intel Core i9-10900K, operating in the frequency range from 3.7 to 5.3 GHz. As for multi-threaded tasks, the superiority of the new AMD flagship over the Core i9-10900K is up to 87.8%.
Intel is ready to offer chips with no more than ten cores in the mass consumer segment, so comparing the new mainstream AMD Ryzen 5950X with the same HEDT Core i9-10980XE processor here would not be entirely appropriate. However, AMD’s new flagship leaves it behind — the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X is up to 33.5% faster in multi-threaded tasks than the 18-core Core i9-10980XE.

Of course, this is only «synthetics» and we will be able to find out the real capabilities of the new Zen 3 chips only after their first full-fledged tests and reviews begin to appear. And if in games the Zen 3 series shows its superiority over Intel solutions, then the current generation of Intel Comet Lake-S processors will have nothing to oppose them. And it is not yet entirely clear whether the upcoming Intel Rocket Lake-S series of processors will be able to find a suitable answer, the release of which is expected in the first half of next year.
