Scientists have proposed a super-fast plastic interface for transmitting signals between chips
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) presented a promising development — a high-speed interface for transferring data between chips on boards. Today, copper tracks or cables are used for this, as well as optical communication lines, but each of them has its own disadvantages. The new solution offers data transmission over polymer lines thinner than a human hair. It could turn the industry around.

When transferring large amounts of data, the problems of copper are obvious — this is the same rapid increase in consumption (power dissipation). Another problem with optical lines is that converting electrical signals into optical signals requires special electronics that are poorly compatible with silicon. In other words, you cannot directly transfer optical signals from one chip to another. It turned out that you can combine the advantages of each of the methods and protect yourself from the disadvantages of each of them.
Experts from MIT, together with researchers from Intel and two US national laboratories, proposed to transfer data from chip to chip through the thinnest polymer channels at high frequencies — in the subterahertz range. Silicon chips can be made to operate in this high frequency range, and researchers have demonstrated this. It turns out that the interface for working with polymer transmission channels can be built into modern semiconductor solutions, or it is quite simple to produce them in the form of discrete solutions, which is still not as difficult as the production of optical converters. This will simultaneously increase the speed of data exchange between the chips on the board and reduce consumption, since there will be no heat dissipation like in copper.
An experiment with polymer channels for data transmission in the sub-terahertz range showed that the signal speed reaches 105 Gb / s, which is ten times faster than via the USB 3 interface.one. In this case, the cross-section of the polymer conductor was 0.4 × 0.25 mm, and the data was transmitted in parallel through three frequency-spaced channels.
Obviously, a strand of such conductors and frequency division can increase the transmission speed many times, while the weight will be completely incomparable with copper channels. Researchers expect this benefit to be welcomed in the aerospace and automotive industries, where every extra gram of payload can count.
