AMD remembered Project Quantum, a compact yet powerful dual-GPU gaming system
Back in 2021, AMD caught fire with an ambitious idea: to create a compact Project Quantum gaming system with two GPUs and a complex liquid cooling system. At first, the design was simplified, and then it fell into the long-term altogether. Hope for a revival of the project comes now that images of the system’s case have appeared in a fresh AMD patent application.

Five years ago, AMD chose to wait for more powerful components to bring Project Quantum to market, and early prototypes used an Intel Core i7-4790K processor and an ASRock Z97E-ITX / AC motherboard. Instead of two graphics processors in a compact case, only one is located, and the components of the liquid cooling system had to be moved into a separate case (pictured above).

If you take a closer look at the photo of the back panel of early prototypes, you can find a fitting for connecting a liquid cooling system. In a patent application dated September 15 this year, AMD provides an illustration of a strange power connector with ten pins in this place. Apparently, it is necessary to connect an external power supply. Indeed, the «teremok» from the very beginning was not very large, and from a layout point of view, certain elements would have to be removed outside the hull. On the other hand, such a solution makes it possible to expect that sufficiently productive components will be prescribed inside the case of the gaming system, since they need an external power supply unit with such a serious-looking connector.

In addition to the connectors for the antennas of wireless adapters, on the back panel you can see a decent number of ports for connecting monitors. A single DVI adds at least three HDMI ports and four DisplayPort outputs, with almost half implemented by the motherboard. This may indicate the optional use of a discrete video card as part of the system: in the initial configurations, a hybrid processor with integrated graphics will cope with its responsibilities. It is still difficult to assert whether the project will develop at a new stage, but the presence of an AMD patent application indicates work on the creation of a gaming system in a familiar case of an unusual shape.
