Gamers have realized the power of cores: quad-core processors are rapidly losing popularity
According to the latest Steam statistics for September, there is a shift in the processor segment towards chips with more cores. In frequency, users of the gaming service began to more often choose 6-, 8-10-, 12-, 16-core processors for their systems.
The palm of the most popular processors is still held by four-core models. Among users of the gaming platform, they are used by 45.69% of players. At the same time, their popularity is clearly starting to decline. Back in May, it was 48.34%. The second most used processors are six-core solutions with a share of 26.39%. Growth in relation to August amounted to 0.44 percentage points. In third place are dual-core chips. They, according to statistics from Steam, accounted for 16.30%, which is 0.68 percentage points less than in August.
The most significant growth in September was observed in the segment of eight-core solutions. They added 0.63 percentage points at once. They are now used by 9.33% of Steam users. Both AMD and Intel solutions are present here. Both companies now offer eight-core processors at very attractive prices.
In general, it is unfortunately impossible to divide the above values between AMD and Intel for processors with a small number of cores. Although, as far as processors with more than eight cores are concerned, it is quite easy to guess which of the companies has made the greatest contribution to this or that segment.
For example, AMD does not have 10- and 14-core processor models. Therefore, the main growth of 0.03 percentage points compared to August among 10-core solutions is the merit of Intel, or rather, the Core i9-10850K and Core i9-10900K processors. Moreover, if in May 10-core solutions accounted for 0.08%, then in September their share doubled to 0.16%.
Both companies are represented in the 12-core segment. According to Steam, their share in May was 0.37%, but by September it had grown to 0.61%. If we consider that Intel does not have new processors with 12 cores, except perhaps Core-X, then we can safely attribute the merit to the growth of AMD, and in particular its Ryzen 9 3900X / XT chips. There are no new 14-core processors on the market, and AMD does not have them at all, so we can confidently say that their share of 0.01% in Steam statistics belongs to Intel.
Both Intel and AMD offer consumer 16-core processors. Intel has representatives of the Core-X family of HEDT processors, while AMD has the «mainstream» Ryzen 9 3950X. And to a greater extent, it is she who should be thanked for the increase in the share of sixteen cores by 0.02 percentage points in the Steam statistics for September.
Interestingly, the latest data on the gaming platform also contains statistics for tri-core solutions. They account for a whopping 1.01% of the Steam market. This is greetings from the late 2000s, when AMD had such strange Athlon II and Phenom II in their assortment.
Surely in the future, the shift towards multi-core processor configurations will only increase. And the main merit in this belongs to AMD. It was she who, in 20021, paved the way for an active increase in the number of cores in processors in the consumer segment, launching the first generation of Ryzen chips on the market. While the older models of the competitor could only offer four high-performance cores, the older Ryzen 7 models of the first generation received eight processing cores.
Coming soon, AMD 8-core / 16-thread hybrid processors will be used in the new Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5 game consoles. It is highly likely that game makers will now take a more responsible approach to optimizing their titles for multi-core chips, allowing them to unleash their full potential. As a result, PC users will benefit too.
