Intel Confirms Rocket Lake Desktop Processor Timeline Ahead of Zen 3 Announcement
07.10.2021 [19:00],
Ilya Gavrichenkov

There was unofficial information yesterday that the next generation of Intel desktop processors, codenamed Rocket Lake, will be released in March 2021. Today, these data have actually been confirmed by the company itself through the mouth of its representative. The official position is that the Rocket Lake processor family will be unveiled during the first quarter of next year.

The relatively upcoming 11th Gen desktop Core desktop processors were announced today in a corporate blog by John Bonini, Vice President, Intel Client Devices, for Desktop, Workstations and Gaming. According to him, the processors codenamed Rocket Lake will not only come out in the first quarter of 2021, but will also bring support for the PCI Express 4 bus.0.

“This will be another fantastic processor for gaming, and we look forward to sharing more details in the near future. There is still a lot to be done, so stay tuned!»- wrote John Bonini. Unfortunately, the Intel representative did not disclose any other details regarding the development of the desktop platform, and devoted the main part of his message to a story about the company’s extensive interaction with developers and publishers of computer games.

True, among other things, the senior executive paid attention to the fact that the processor frequency remains the most important factor in determining the gaming performance of systems. According to him, it is precisely due to the achievement of frequencies at the level of 5.3 GHz in turbo mode that today’s Core i9-10900K (desktop) and Core i9-10980HK (mobile) processors are the best solutions for gaming PCs. The proximity of such a statement with the story about Rocket Lake can be regarded as a hint that the 11th generation of Core processors will be able to boast of relatively high frequencies.

Based on information from various unofficial sources, Rocket Lake processors will receive an LGA 1200 performance and will remain compatible with existing motherboards based on Intel 400 series chipsets. However, along with them, an updated family of boards will be released, using the newer 500 series chipsets and better adapted to support PCIe 4.0-devices. Rocket Lake processors will continue to be produced in 14nm process technology and are expected to receive configurations with no more than eight processing cores. But they will use the new Cypress Cove microarchitecture — adapted to the 14nm Willow Cove technology, which is now used in Tiger Lake mobile processors. According to preliminary data, which has not yet been confirmed in official statements by Intel, the actual appearance of Rocket Lake on the market will have to wait until March, that is, until the end of the first quarter.

Intel’s disclosure of the facts about the preparation of promising desktop Rocket Lake processors is probably connected with AMD’s presentation scheduled for tomorrow. It is expected to showcase the new Zen 3 microarchitecture and the first desktop processors based on it. As a reminder, the AMD event will take place on October 8 at 19:00 Moscow time.
