Microsoft explains why browsers in Windows 10 create so many processes
07.10.2021 [13:36],
Vladimir Fetisov

Many have noticed that modern browsers create a large number of processes even in cases where only one tab is open. According to Microsoft, this is due to the multithreaded architecture of browsers, in which web applications and plugins are launched in separate processes from the tabs and the browser itself.

A large number of processes are running in the Windows 10 operating system, which can be seen on the corresponding tab of the Task Manager. Here you can see that several processes are connected with the running browser at once. Microsoft claims that this is due to the peculiarities of the architecture of modern browsers, which involves the use of different processes to perform certain tasks.

This approach is designed to improve the performance, security and reliability of the browser. For example, if in the process of work there was a problem with the rendering engine, as a result of which one of the tabs crashed, this will not affect the browser itself and other open tabs in it. The architecture of browsers includes other processes aimed at improving performance and reliability.

This allows Microsoft and Google to use a limited sandbox environment. For example, if attackers try to attack a computer through a website, by isolating the processes, you can prevent them from gaining control of the entire system. It is also useful when you go to low-quality sites that can lead to crashes, but the harm from them will affect only one process and will not affect the browser as a whole.

To reduce the amount of resources consumed by processes, Microsoft has developed a feature called «Sleeping Tabs», which has not yet appeared in stable versions of Windows 10. This tool helps the browser to pause processing of unused tabs, as well as return to their display if necessary. A similar experimental feature appeared earlier in the Chrome browser.
