Launch video and details of the Cygnus cargo spacecraft mission to the ISS
Yesterday at 20:36 Moscow time a two-stage launch vehicle «Antares» with an unmanned spacecraft Cygnus NG-15 took off from the site 0A of the Wallops cosmodrome in Virginia. A «truck» commissioned by NASA will deliver 3,719 kg of cargo, including scientific equipment, fresh food and supplies for 7 astronauts aboard the space station. He also carries on board new equipment for spacewalk.
It is curious that the first stage of the Antares rocket uses two powerful Russian RD-181 engines, and the Ukrainian enterprise Yuzhnoye is engaged in its assembly. The Cygnus NG-15 mission is the 15th ISS replenishment launch performed by Northrop Grumman since 2021.

The cargo spacecraft launched into orbit will dock at the station in two days and on February 22, at about 12:40 Moscow time, using the ISS Canadarm-2 remote manipulator arm, it will be docked to the American Unity module. Japanese cosmonaut Soichi Noguchi will be in charge of the docking, followed by American Mike Hopkins. The ship will stay at the station for about three months, after which it will disconnect and burn up upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
In addition to food, the Cygnus has an improved brine (contaminated liquid from astronauts’ waste products) processing unit on board for the space station’s water recirculation system. NASA said the new node will allow more water to be extracted from urine than existing equipment at the station. The agency considers it a key piece of equipment for future long-term manned missions to the Moon and Mars. Long-term crewed exploration missions require a water recovery rate of about 98%, NASA says, and there is currently no modern brine technology to help achieve that goal. The new urine excretion node is designed to close this gap. The equipment works by using special membranes to separate pollutants from the brine.
Also on board the Cygnus there is an additional sleeping capsule for the crew of the 64th expedition. Currently, five astronauts are working in the American segment — four Crew-1 specialists, delivered by SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, and Kate Rubins, who arrived at the ISS on the Soyuz spacecraft. At the same time, there are only 4 specialized berths. Michael Hopkins, Crew Dragon commander, has been sleeping in the ship since launch in November.
Among other things, the SBC-2 supercomputer, developed jointly by Hewlett-Packard and NASA engineers, will be delivered to the ISS. Finally, Cygnus carries on board spare parts for space station toilets, equipment for upcoming spacewalks, a radiation detection system created by US and UAE students, microsatellites, as well as several scientific experiments. In particular, Cygnus will deliver devices to the orbital station, with the help of which the advantages of creating an artificial retina of the eye in zero gravity will be studied, changes in the muscle structure in worms will be studied, and experiments will be carried out to grow high-quality protein crystals.
